10 - 12 years

Elapsed time from birth to slaughter of the turkey on your table;
9 – 15 weeks (That’s WEEKS).

Ratio of “living time” gifted to your turkey by The Creator, to the “living time” allowed by the factory farm industry supported by turkey eating consumers;

Percentage of “Living Time” stolen from the birds by those who eat them;

Natural behavioral tendencies; Turkeys are social, playful birds; they enjoy the company of others. They relish having their feathers stroked and like to chirp, cluck, and gobble along to their favorite tunes. Anyone who spends time with them on farm sanctuaries quickly learns that turkeys are as varied in personality as dogs and cats. When not forced to live in filthy factory farms, turkeys spend their days caring for their young, building nests, foraging for food, taking dust-baths, preening themselves, and roosting high in trees.

Rape – Artificial insemination, and injections of near lethal doses of growth stimulants and other hormones, antibiotics, various other drugs Etc,

Terrorism – Subjecting non-threatening sentient beings to; Daily conditions so threatening that birds remain in constant fight-or-flight mode, and hormones related to extreme desperation continually saturate the bloodstream,

Torture – De-beaking, toe-trimming, wing cutting (All without the use of anesthetics), separated from family members, forcing birds to spend their short lives crowded wing-to-wing, beak-to-butt, standing in urine and feces, choking and gasping in an atmosphere deficient in oxygen and replete with poisonous methane and nitrogen compounds and saturated with deadly infectious microbes… struggling in conditions severe enough to kill high percentages before slaughter time, And some undergo the increasingly popular practice (Banned in many counties, but legal in the U.S.) of “Flank Battering”, delivering bruising blows to the live birds body to “Tenderize” the meat, Then transported to the killing facility, tossed and squeezed into trailers driven unprotected through any and all weather conditions, hung live, upside down on body pearling conveyor hooks… and then,,, well it gets worse.

Murder… Actually premeditated Pedacide (Slaughter of individuals in childhood), turkeys who would naturally live 12 years are inhumanely killed while still youngsters (At about 3months old) and processed for your feast.

Additionally, handling fowl is the easiest way to contract salmonella and campylobacter, which sickens or kills many people every year.

Environment… Factory farming animals to produce food is the single industrial practice with the greatest insulting ramifications on the environment and therefore the future… The near future is the era where our children and grandchildren would like to live in a world with safe water and breathable air. Some people think that it’s just not fair to steal the future from our kids for no good reason. With regards to the wasting and polluting of water, the poisoning of the air, the wasting of resources, the release of greenhouse gasses, the clearing of rainforests (The Earth’s Lungs and Medicine Chest) Etc. industrial “Factory Farm” methods, which produce virtually all the birds killed for Thanksgiving feasts are the worst offenders. Concentrated Factory Farms provide the genesis for very threatening infectious diseases. Such operations for producing fowl are the birthplace of “Bird Flu” as one example.

There is no way to produce a 35 lb., 3 month old turkey without forced feeding, caged immobilization, and huge pharmaceutical input… This can not produce a healthy bird, and eating such “Abuse” certainly does not produce healthy people…
By the way “Organic” Turkeys are still the product of disease producing abuse, commercial “Free Range” is only a deceiving term, and while “Organic Meat” may deliver fewer poisons it’s still murder.

Eating commercially grown animals is a practice which (Because it is so wasteful and polluting) simply is not sustainable on a planet with limited resources and an ecosystem in delicate balance, and such behavior does indeed directly take food away from other hungry people and reduce our ability to provide food and a clean world for those who are now the children we so love.

More and more people just can no longer reconcile the hypocrisy that allows for “Giving Thanks for the Plenty”, when that “Plenty” has taken life from another, fostered the acceptance of killing (By the Billions Every Year) and so damaged our one and only Home Planet as to threaten the well-being of everyone in future times.

It seems to many, who have considered the facts, that there will be no way to excuse such selfish behavior when the grandchildren ask “Why did you so carelessly contribute to the ruination of our only life-giving planet, and what was it like to live in a time when people participated in such horrific and careless consumerism which was responsible for torture and murder of those in their care?”

This is the unholy legacy that turkey eating people bring into their bodies and share with family and friends…

We sincerely wish that everyone has a happy healthy Thanksgiving.

…Thanksgiving is an appropriate time to exercise compassion and not interrupt the peace and happiness of others.

The Secret Life of Mitch Spinach

You know, and I know that GMOs and natural foods are mutually exclusive, but the brilliant executives running the large and small [ill-named] natural food stores across the continent don’t get it.

We deserve better. Here it is!

Well, I’ve been talking to the folks at The Green PolkaDot Box for a week or so, trying to get to the bottom of their business model.

My contact has been very forthcoming and answered a long list of questions satisfactorily.

What I most despise about modern natural food stores is the shameful promotion of GMOs. Our local corporate NFS is saturated with GMOs. It’s a travesty. This shameful policy is practiced by the big on-line outlets too.

Something better, much better!

Oh ya, the prices are as good as it gets (from what I’ve seen).

I did a random price comparison between The Green PolkaDot Box and iHerb (whose prices generally can’t be beat) and The Green PolkaDot guys had the lowest price (sometimes by a significant margin) 9 out of 10 times and tied on one.

In all my enthusiasm I forgot to mention that there is a membership fee. That’s how they pay the bills. The way it was explained to me, they buy direct from manufacturers at the level and price that big distributors do and make nothing on product while trying to keep prices (on average) at least 20% lower than the next best price. So there is that sticky membership thing.

But, there are several ways to waive the membership fee, forever.

Anyway, I think that I, and DrBillyHealth.com are days away from endorsing these guys.

Some of us desperately want to support an outfit that is behaving responsibly about GMOs. Every freaking storefront retail [so-called] natural food store out there has been selling us out all along and are in fact the biggest offenders and most shameful promoters of the GMO invasion.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t generally like the paid membership thing.

Would I happily pay a fee for the honor of supporting a natural foods/supplements/meds/body care/house wares/fresh produce seller that exists in large part to be on the sane side of GMO insanity and pour a little cold water on the Monsanto devil? Absolutely. But I’m going to align with these guy (I think) without paying a fee anyway. You have that option too… for a while.

Don’t do anything until you talk to me.

We Are All Mid-Stream

Everyone lives downstream from someone and something else.

Everyone lives upstream from someone and something else.

Within the Circle of Life, it’s the ‘Circle of Living’ we are talking about which places all of us individually, not in the center of the circle, but in the middle of the path.

You (we) are here

This can be a gift and a curse, and it represents both an inheritance and a responsibility.

You are the product of, and you are subject to; people, other animals and conditions that come before you in the flow of life, and the flows of time, water, air, ideas, developments, politics, Etc.

Other beings, individuals, generations and sure, the water and air, are to an extent, the product of, and at the mercy of you as well.

Environmentally speaking, everyone’s back yard touches someone else’s back yard.
The universal “Connect” cannot be severed. We are all parts of the same whole.

We not only create circumstances that others inherit immediately and long term, but because the connected-ness is both circular and linear, we also inherit circumstances from others and of our own making. Good and/or bad. Like it or not. And we make these contributions (Adjustments to the Whole) with every move that we make, with every decision; certainly every time we exercise our individual “Consumerism”.

As a recipient of your share of the factors set forth by others upstream from where you are on the land, in the atmosphere, in time, or with regards to the water that washes and hydrates your body, you probably appreciate some degree of thoughtfulness upstream. You must surely prefer that the people upstream from you and your loved ones, consider with some sense of responsibility, the ramifications of their actions, that is, that they (We) think first about what circumstances will be generated as a result of their (Our) choices.

Likewise, it is safe to assume that everyone downstream of your personal world will very much appreciate your prudence and careful consideration when making decisions such as;
* Whether to burn the autumn leaves, thus choking the air with hydrocarbons, or more thoughtfully, composting them, creating healthy soil. * Whether to buzz around town in a Hummer or a Prius, Etc.

It seems imperative to first understand and accept the concept of “Connectedness”. Then we can act thoughtfully… Or not. Either way connectedness is an absolute reality.

The precept of universal connectedness is, to some of us just too obvious to put into words. I mean, the simple fact that everything / everyone is connected, is overtly self-evident, like “Water is Wet” or “Fire is Hot”. But as I have found while working with people on issues of health for many years, some of us just don’t look at the world in that way… Until we choose to “Think About it” or are forced to think about it.

In the Thinking-ness of people, the further back in history we look, and/or the more towards the eastern cultures or the aboriginal societies we travel, the more we can see that the people possess an inborn knowing that “All Is Connected”. To suggest otherwise would be to postulate the absurd, the ridiculous.

In modern times, and much more so in the west, the average person is likely to suffer, to some degree, from the popular but erroneous concept that somehow sees as ‘separate’, the various parts of a whole.

I have found time and time again, over many years that some people simply never considered that a sour stomach could have anything to do with a pain in the head, or that lower back pain might stem from constipation, or that the entire body for that matter is represented by (And Accessible Through) reflex areas on the soles of the feet, the palms of the hands and through acupuncture points along the energy meridians which are located all over the body.

With such a ‘segmented’ picture of one’s own self, it’s not a long stretch to think also of the world as just an array of separate ingredients, almost as if the lines drawn on maps by governments somehow isolate the soil, the air or the human-ness of the people on one side from that/those on the other. We in the west have for some while now, been living in a society with a mindset which furthers, fosters and even teaches the fallacy of separate-ness. We may be slowly coming back around to a more Wholistic understanding, yet a good example of a bad idea is the field(s) of medicine, which some 100 or so years ago, was taken over by corporate investment interests. After it was reconfigured into “The Business of Medicine” the new system helped to dramatically alter the way in which people viewed themselves and the world. The AMA take-over effectively buried the Wholistic understanding of the body, and with it the operational model called “Terrain Theory” * in favor of the much more lucrative allopathic system and its self-supportive “Germ Theory”, which breaks the being (person) up into separate, unrelated parts.

Have I digressed with this brief historic snippet or the paralleling of thinking styles to medicinal formats? No, not at all.

We act based on what we believe. There is an important difference between believing and knowing. We may “Believe” what someone of authority declares… But that is not “Knowing”, and that’s food for another discussion. But to the point, is that as we have become “Modernized” we have been thinking less from a place of instinct and more from a place of suggestion.

In fact, our thoughts are very much (Actually Mostly) the product of advertising/programming. Therefore, since actions are born of thoughts, our actions are very much the fruit of advertising. I thought that it might be helpful to illustrate some of the ways that we might have come to think of ourselves as separated from one another, from the whole of this existence or from what we call the environment.

Now, allow me to get all the way back to the original point. The bodies that we run around in, the houses that we live in and the spots of earth where they [our homes] sit, are all downstream from lots of other people, places and environmental influences. OK?

Also, we and our spot on earth, and all the stuff that we create as we live our lives are upstream from someone else. Yes. And in fact, we can say:
“All of us are at once, upstream and downstream from all of us”.
Truly, since life is a web of absolute interconnectedness, everything that each one of us does has some effect on everyone else on the planet, and has an effect also on the future. That circular/linear nature of the “web of connection” illustrates how our choices, whether they be good or not-so-good, can and will come back and nip us in the backside.

It just makes good sense to “Tread Lightly” and to not make messes that are hard to clean up, particularly on a global or time-expanded scale. It just makes good sense to not be wasteful with un-renewable, or hard to replace resources. It’s a no-Brainer that we should be conservative when consuming products that use large amounts of energy or generate gross amounts of pollutants in the production process. And it takes only a pinch of common sense to understand that we should have a heck of a good reason before releasing any amount of any kind of poison into the environment, for any purpose what-so-ever.

But, should we ever forget that we are all related parts of the same whole, we might just carelessly flush the poison, waste the water, or even consume meals that represent rain-forest destruction, inexcusable water consumption and water pollution, major air pollution, topsoil erosion, disease generation, desertification of vital-fertile land and that may directly contribute to mass starvation, unnecessary waste, avoidable harm Etc.

Mindfully trying not to alienate those of us who are not at all concerned with animal (Non Human) welfare, I won’t mention the torture; inhumane exploitation and “Fractionated Lifespan” leading to gruesome murder that end up as some of our meal choices… OOPS, I guess I just did. Please excuse me. But after all, the point is: All things are connected!

Clearly some guidelines for how to make planet-preserving, climate-friendly choices might sprout from this discussion. If we just help get people to think about the reality of connected-ness, we might all be a bit “Cleaner” and “Greener” so as to not harm ourselves, abuse others, wreck the planet or steal the future and send our kids the bill.

Another way to appreciate the impact of the upstream – downstream phenomenon is to think about how it feels to have the “Stuff” of various different food choices flow into your body and around and through your cells.

Take for instance, your favorite berry, Blue, Black, Straw, whichever, sustainable-ly (Organically) grown of course; the culmination of the kind care of the grower, giving water, adding love, and the magic in the bush’s DNA turning sunlight into Chlorophyll and other brightly colored Carotenoids. Eventually the bright, sweet, juicy fruits are picked just as they are ready to fall from the branch. And think about how life affirming and healthy and “Clean” it feels to follow the assimilation into, and the circulation around your inner self as you make the vitality of the “Berry Delight” part of you.

That, for most of us is an experience of absolute enjoyment and an affirmation of high level health. It leaves us feeling not only nourished, but clean and alive. And to picture what that fistful of berries looked and smelled like when they were still upstream, plump and glistening on the bush… pleasing to the imagination.

Of course, this berry bush is grown in a sustainable manner, without the application of any poisons or growth stimulants which would foul the air, kill the soil and accumulate in the fruit body. And the energy input is all free and clean solar energy, plus what the farmer donates. We don’t have to disguise the berries in any way in order to like the way they make us feel. For most of us, it feels good.

And it is rewarding and satisfying to know that the production of the luscious berries has not strained the planet’s bank of resources. In growing and eating the berries, we will have actually contributed to the health of the Earth and ourselves as well.

It is good to be downstream of the berry bush!

Then you might imagine just what you are downstream of when choosing to eat a hamburger, or if you prefer to eat a little more upscale, make it a fine cut of steak. It doesn’t matter much.

Upstream from a burger or a steak, it’s not very pretty, at least that’s what I think, and you are of course, entitled to think otherwise. Upstream there will be a one ton beast (That is not a derogatory term, but a word meaning large animal) with a pretty friendly disposition even though he / she (Could be either) has been mistreated [Gross understatement] since birth. Here’s the short of it; Shortly after birth, “Steak” (You can call him) was taken away from his mom and the spent most of his life standing in a filthy stall in a filthy building with hundreds of other “Steaks” and “Burgers” on a compound housing 50 – 100 thousand other prisoners.

The whole place stunk to high hell inside and out, zillions of flies feasting on literally tons, no hundreds of tons of Steak poop.

You would not want to draw a breath within miles of the compound. And the place is noisy 24 hours every day with crying animals and machinery. In one building, your Steak is standing in a stall ankle deep in poop and pee all the time, with his head stuck between bars, being force-fed a diet that upsets his gut and makes him sick and fat.

Day after day, conditions are beyond miserable, his instinct is to run, but he cannot escape, and the continuous overeating, cramped quarters, lingering sub-clinical illness and steady drug input so reduce his vitality and injure his “will” that self preservation instincts are all but completely nullified as time goes on.

The atmosphere in the cell-block is not at all what we think of as air, it’s suffocating. Just the breath from all the others is hot and choking, add to that the farts and burps (Huge amounts of poisonous gas are released from the guts of the sick animals) and emanations from standing waste.

The horror goes on every day, all day and night, no love, no expression of dignity, just “Feed” going in one end, and disease ridden poop and fluid coming out the other. The feed is made of rancid plant material of a nature that your Steak’s system is not designed to digest and includes the “Renderings” from other unfortunate “Grown for food, Animals”, such as various parts and fluids from pigs, chickens and other cattle who were too sick to survive till slaughter age.

All of the plant material in the feed was grown with criminally high amounts of poison chemicals (and most of it was genetically modified), insuring that the feed retains scary amounts of insecticide, herbicide, and inorganic fertilizer residue and the unpredictable secondary compounds that are born of the mixing of the various primary poisons.

And of course, the ground up ‘animal tissue supplement’, (The “Remains”) (Basically the stuff scraped up off the floor, and parts of terminally ill animals) put into the feed of your “Steak” (Who is by nature, is a grass eating VEGETARIAN herbivore) is from animals who also were force fed the same quality of feed so that all the “Nastiness” concentrates in the bodies of the fat animals, then in the bodies of people who eat them.

Additional “Inputs” include growth stimulating and gender confusing hormones (They may be injected, mixed in the feed, and in the U.S. are also administered via implants), insanely potent and frequent doses of antibiotics and various other pharmaceutical cocktails too.

So, life for Steak is hell… until, at about the young age of 15 months, (That’s right… just over one year out of a natural life-span of 25 years), the bearer of your meal is kicked, beat, and electrically prodded into the slaughter house where the hell becomes indescribable… There really are no sad, mean, desperate, or unholy enough words to adequately express the horror, and this in no fun to write, and I hope no fun to read. Let’s just say that desperation runs high. It feels like “There Is No God”.

The smells, the sounds, the “Energy” in that place cannot produce anything with any redeeming value what-so-ever, and obviously at that stage of the process, the bodies of those “Commodity Animals” moving down the murder conveyer are flooded with “Terror hormones” and “Fear hormones”.

What might be to you, a burger or a steak is the culmination of cleared rain-forests, chewed down to the dirt public land, poisoned cropland, wasted and polluted water, mountains of infected manure, tons of noxious greenhouse gases, new and virulent strains of disease organisms and the legacy of terrorism and torture so perverse that it defies comparison.

If you have eaten a burger or a steak lately, and if not, the next time that you do, please think about how it feels to be DOWNSTREAM of that.

How does it really feel as you sense the assimilation of all the destruction, misery, planet-poisoning, Etc. into your body? How does it feel, really, to make that Poly-Poison, that hyper-misery part of your being? Even though it has been carefully disguised with a tasty soft-soap alias (Such as; Burger, meaning the ground of flesh of 200 sick, desperate cattle all mixed together), color stabilizing chemicals, condiments and then fire, you can still feel what it really is, as you take a bite, chew it thoroughly, swallow and follow the progression of its essence, as it intimately merges with, and becomes YOU.

If you allow yourself to think about it, you realize that slab of flesh embodies a huge amount of wasted resources due to the extreme inefficiency of growing animals for food (Cycling virgin food through animals yields a ridiculously miniscule return on investment).

Who could argue that the world becomes a better place, the CLIMATE (And all that the word climate infers) improves every time a person chooses to place him/herself downstream of guilt-free berries, beans, broccoli or barley instead of the planet killing factory farm tragedy?
Take a look at Raj Patel’s ‘The $200 Hamburger’. He is a world renowned World Bank economist by the way, and he admits that the ‘$200.00’ price tag is grossly conservative, as each burger, in reality, costs us all far more than 200 bucks.

A closed-loop system:

This wonderful world really is a tight-knit, closed loop system. What we do at the dinner table, we really do to all of us and to the whole of our world. And whether we support sustainability and repair, or pollution, degradation, meanness and disease, and even if our support stems only from a solitary meal eaten in privacy behind drawn shades and paid for with our own hard earned money, we do indeed share the fruits (sour or sweet) of our choice with everyone and most certainly with the future.

Demand and then Supply:
Yet another applicable way to consider the upstream – downstream model with regards to dietary choice is how it fits with the supply and demand system, more aptly called “Demand and then Supply”.
In this illustration, everyone and everything, and the future is downstream of your choices, your demand. If you choose to eat (Demand) very high quality food, then high quality food must be produced (Supplied). To service your wise demand, more sustainably grown, soil-enriching, environment-repairing, wellness-creating food will be produced.
And every unit of “Planet-Friendly”, “People-Healing” food that is produced displaces a unit of the contrary stuff, simple.

Likewise, every time someone chooses to grab a burger, dress a steak or chug a cold cow’s milk, that demand must be satisfied and that commodity replaced. Downstream of that choice is a big business machine happy to torture, murder, pollute, decimate the environment and spread disease, operating a system that is the poster child of UN-SUSTAINABILITY for the profit it makes on each and every bite.

What a profound responsibility it is to be in this web, but we cannot opt out even if we should want to. Anyway, who would want to opt out when we can do so much to help, through sustainable participation, compassionate participation?
This inescapable responsibility need not feel like a burden. On the contrary this “connection thing” is a most fortunate opportunity. At this momentous time, the world desperately needs help, and we can offer that help, we can start helping in a very big way right now. At this moment, every man, woman and child, and every aspect of the natural world, truly the very planet and all that can be the future, needs my help and your help. We share a grand opportunity to turn the tide of hopelessness into; not just something a little less gruesome, but into a life better than anyone alive today has ever known, in a world sweeter then history remembers. We really can make that big of a difference, that much of an improvement.
Good choices are highly contagious.

Pertinent to a discussion of dietary choice, is that just one meal out of a week’s worth of meals which is “Planet Friendly” easily, because it is so satisfying and rewarding, turns into two smart meals, then three, and so on. And likewise, one person who eats more “Climate Friendly” and healthfully, inevitably grows into two, and so on. No preaching necessary, it just happens. Like setting afloat a raft full of medicine headed for an ailing tribe down the river, with every thoughtful meal choice, we will bring our world, all her children and even our own future, that much closer to the healthy, happy state that we long for and that our children certainly deserve.

It’s so convenient; it’s great that we can start right now. From whatever point we are at, we can start bringing things back into balance with our very next meal or snack. Whether you are the first of your inner circle to make the commitment, acting with a comrade, or whatever the intricacies of your situation, please know that you are, from the moment that you decide to take a stand, a ‘Seed of Hope and of Help” for all that we know. The ripples of your thoughtful ways touch everyone, everywhere, for all time. The vital seed that you are, can only grow, and will grow till it gives renewal and rejuvenation even beyond your ability to see or know. And in turn the fruits of your thoughtfulness produce and become more new seeds of change. And as the circle goes round and round and the life force flows from all – though all, it keeps getting better. And isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be? Isn’t that the way it should be? You are the beginning! You are the future! Isn’t it great?

And, “sister atoms of hydrogen from the same creative event are part of the structure of the bodies of beings on some other inhabited planets all throughout the universe. That’s some serious connection!

Consider “Thought Waves”. Science knows that the nervous system, including brain activity is chemo-electric, therefore all thoughts have a radio frequency component… Thoughts (Thinking) create the transmission of radio signals. And the fact is that radio waves never die. Not with time and not with distance, they just get weaker as they reach farther from the source.
The radio transmissions that result from thinking are “Thought Waves”. Everyone transmits them and everyone receives them, whether we “Think” about it or not… And at some level, everyone interprets them when received.
You cannot hide from the thought waves of everyone else, and you cannot keep a thought to yourself. That illustrates a critical responsibility, don’t you think? That’s Connectedness!

Consider the “Fully Wired” communication consciousness of your own body. Absolutely every one of the 100 Trillion cells that call your body home, inform, and are informed by, all the others, at the speed of light, all the time.

Consider also the anabolic-catabolic (Nutrient-Waste) cycles. These also well illustrate intimate connectedness, for instance; we and other animals eat food, one result is that we poop. Then in one example, the poop fertilizes food plants, and we eat again… Then we poop again, and so on. It has been said that the bathroom is only two steps from the kitchen, or a “pile” is just two steps away from dinner. That’s an intimate connection.

Hydrologic cycle
Hydrogen atoms in water are constantly shuffling from one molecule to the next, pairing with a particular oxygen atom for only a millisecond.

Atmosphere
Up to half of the smog in California today may have been generated in Asia last week.
Even if you wake up in Manhattan, open the balcony door on the fourteenth floor above 52nd street, and step out, your first morning breath of outside air will bring with it thousand of atoms that were part of the molecules of essential spruce oil expired through the needles of Colorado Blue Spruce trees living on the slopes of Pikes Peak. Some of the spruce oil molecules may still be intact and will have a “Natrual-izing” effect on your body, whose DNA has grown up in the wild. Ancient wilderness inside you, in the middle of NYC. Even if the main identifiable scent is Eau de Smog you actually bring into your being a pleasing gift of the natural world manufactured by evergreen trees 1,000 miles away. Then, as you exhale, you will send out innumerable molecules of carbon dioxide, your contribution to the 5 billion pounds of CO2 expelled by humans every day. Much of this gas, in turn becomes food for Spruce trees all over the world. You have a mutually supportive, intimate relationship with trees (And plants and animals of all kinds) that you have never seen. And moving again, backwards in time, the CO2 that you give to the world today was manufactured in your body mostly from carbon in the food you ate recently, and those same carbon atoms have cycled through plants and animals all the way back to, well, all the way back.

Segregation:
If you are at all sensitive to tobacco smoke, maybe you have noticed that there actually is no “Invisible Force Field” dividing the smoking section from the Non-Smoking section… The so called Non-Smoking section may in fact be that, a section, but it certainly is NOT a Non-Smoke section.

Noise Pollution:
Ever have the contents of your glove compartment begin to vibrate in unison with the contents of your head as a shiny red low profile sedan or monster pick-up truck pulls up next to you at a traffic light and actually rocks your car rhythmically with to power of stray sound waves? You may give thanks that you can’t even hear the rumble, rocketing out of the un-muffled tale-pipe, but more likely your attention is drawn to the unsolicited noise pollution being shared with everyone in the county. That’s why you couldn’t hear to exhaust noise. Unless the Noise pollution is your particular genre of “Music” and you like exercising your eardrums at 160 decibels, heavy-on-the-base, you may not appreciate this degree of “Sharing”. At that time you are downstream of someone who forgot to be thoughtful. Now, if you are like many of us, try as you might to suppress it, thought-waves spontaneously begin to broadcast out from your abused mind. What message do they carry? I hear ya’.
Might as well smile and laugh. Laughter is the best medicine and smiles produce the best thought-waves.
Personally, I am on the waiting list for the first working model of the ‘total automotive de-energizing wand… Point it at the thoughtless noise polluter and the car becomes silent and immobile… Aah, that’s better.

Organic Grains to be Phased Out on Planet Earth

There is a diabolical plan underway which serves to threaten the ability to produce organically grown grains, and it’s even worse than that as it is a plan within a plan that actually threatens most food crops and most plant species on the planet.

(Plants feed the people, the animals that people eat, they clothe us, provide our medicines, building materials, clean our air) …

It’s very real, the mechanism by which this may take place is quite easy to understand, it can affect crops worldwide and there is no known way to reverse it after full initiation.

No known way to reverse it!

This may sound a bit alarmist to those who haven’t been keeping up with what’s been going on in modern ‘laboratory agriculture’ for the past 15-20 years. Those of us who have been watching, know that the above statement is in reality, an understatement.

We may still be able to stop it, but we must get active, our grandkids are counting on us…

1. As many of our readers know, organic varieties of food are superior to commercial (poisoned, nutritionally devalued) varieties and obviously much kinder to our environment. And organic varieties, it should go without saying are vastly superior to genetically perverted Non-Food. Growing food in a sustainable, non-poisonous manner is of course the only option for those who wish to act responsibly with regards to ‘the commons’. It’s a no-brainer, but it bears repeating until it becomes a ‘Know-Brainer’.

2. A plant does not produce an organic food if it is Monsanto-ized (genetically modified) or genetically contaminated. If you are not someone who chooses to eat any organically grown food, your food choices, prices, safety and availability will still be negatively affected because of the GMO invasion… They already have.

3. Cross-contamination of victim plants is inevitable and occurring at an alarming rate as GM (genetically modified) crops expand. Cross-pollination is one form of cross-contamination infecting the world’s food supply, there are others, some as yet unknown… Pollen from GM crops all too easily contaminates crops and wild plants of related types. As a dismal example, virtually all heritage varieties of corn in Mexico (the origin of all corn, seven thousand years in the making) have been found to have some GMO contamination. Canola, alfalfa and cotton also cross-pollinate easily.

There is absolutely no way to contain the genetic contaminants expressed by GM crops planted outside, period! Wind blows, water flows, pollinators migrate, birds eat-fly-deposit and so on. Once unleashed there is no going back.
(Already, the organic and standard Hawaiian papaya industry has been all but wiped out by contamination from genetically modified papaya test sites and plantations.

There is no way to predict the actions and interactions as gene-spliced material mixes with victim plants and finds its way into the bodies of humans and other animals, but we have seen that there can be an endless cascade effect as an intentionally altered gene turns on or off, or up-regulates, down regulates, or otherwise perverts ‘unrelated’ genes.
Indeed we have witnessed numerous derangements as genetic contamination has drifted and infected wild plants and ‘someone else’s’ plants, often huge tracts of valuable food crops. (By now, It’s virtually impossible to grow organic or conventional canola anywhere in Canada because of rampant genetic contamination from GMO rapeseed) … Monsanto never compensates the farmers whose crops are poisoned, whose livelihoods are ruined and they never compensate the citizens for the ruination of ‘The Commons’ (the wild-lands, the air, the water and Earth’s own seed stock which belongs to all of us and our grandchildren).

Now back to the opening statement:

4. The classification of food which has so well and reliably fed humans as to allow for what we know as ‘civilization’ and for humans to crowd the Earth with seven Billion people is GRAIN.

About ten thousand years ago, after stumbling around for roughly a million years foraging and hunting, agriculture was born. That earlier nomadic lifestyle might have been pleasant and healthful, I don’t remember, but it did make it hard to maintain a permanent home and it could not support population expansion, also it left little free time to explore other interests in life. More than anything else, development of grasses, that is to say, the cultivation of GRAINS changed all that. Agriculture made it possible for civilization(s) to flourish.

Cereal grains are, and have been the biggest part of agriculture.

Wheat, corn, rice, barley, sorghum, oat, rye and millet provide about 60% of the calories and over 50% of the protein consumed directly by Earth humans and much higher percentages when the wasteful practice of cycling grains through livestock is figured in (that is to say that people living on the Standard American Diet / SAD, which relies on meat and milk are actually eating little else besides Grain and soy with a smathering of vegetable and fruit because the animals they eat consume huge amounts of grain and soy, that’s another story). At this point we would not be able to support but a fraction of the planet’s 7 billion people and could not put but a teaspoon of meat on the weekly menu without the contribution of grain.

So, organic or not, grain is a big deal.

5. The grains that we know so well, like Wheat and Corn (which most westerners eat in some form at, and in-between every meal), and all of the true grains (rice, barley, oats, rye and others) are actually the seeds of grasses. Grain is grass seed. (World English Dictionary: 1. the small hard seed-like fruit of a grass, esp. a cereal grain).

6. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, after bullying the USDA into submission is poised to introduce its GMO Yard and Lawn Grass product to the individual consumer, and commercial clients. This could bring the ‘Bad Seed’ to your neighbor’s lawn and the local school play ground as early as 2012.

There are some enormous problems associated with the plan. Thanks to the ‘Poison The Planet’ mandate shared by Scotts and Monsanto you may soon find yourself surrounded by super-poison, sick-grass lawns and all the poison and environmental devastation that goes with such insanity, but additionally, you can bet that Scotts and Monsanto are lobbying hard, bullying and lying (their standard MO) to have the lawns of primary schools, college campuses, municipal parks, ballparks, roadway sidings and medians and the rolling hills of country clubs carpeted with their blades of destruction. A sea of deadly green.

From Seeds of Suicide to Seeds of Hope: Why Are Indian Farmers Committing Suicide and How Can We Stop This Tragedy?

The Bad Seed is genetically designed to withstand horrific ultra-saturation applications of the poison RoundUp such that barefoot-ing in the park will be a deadly pastime.

The vision of kids romping in that stuff, grinding the poison into their skin, bringing it home in their clothing (which may sit in the hamper and be washed with the baby’s blankets) and breathing the chemical deep into their young lungs while they are playing hard and respiration is accelerated, exposes the extreme criminality of forcefully marketing such systems. (‘System’ because generally a GMOized seed product like this represents an endless loop of ill-gotten profit for Monsanto and in this case Scotts because [if it is a seed generating plant] it may carry the ‘terminator technology’ trait which renders the plant sterile such that any expansion of the crop (lawn) requires another purchase of seed, and the plant will ‘need’ the application of the herbicide RoundUp sold by the same company, and so on.)

Other ‘externalities’ include, here a just a few:

A hyper-poisoning of the environment as the poison Glyphosate (which on GMOized food and feed crops is often applied at a rate 15 times the normal rate of application for regular commercial crops) runs off to foul streams, rivers, lakes; the volatiles and contaminated particles fill the air and everyone’s lungs (bodies) and the endless ills and health complications which result from further mass-poisoning… and the un-calculable cost associated with that downward spiral (a less productive population as more people are more sick more of the time), accelerated species extinction, Etc .

Neither last nor least, the creation and feeding of uncontrollable, invasive Superweeds, as nuisance weeds adapt to repeated RoundUp applications and become more hardy and invasive… As the (already well underway) superweed problem grows, surely Monsanto and Scotts will be there with ever stronger and more deadly chemical concoctions to address (not fix) the problem that they created (intentionally). There’s that deadly endless loop thing again.

All this nonsense for a yard covered in grass… Grass just wants to grow automatically anyway. Broadcast some seed give it a drink and it grows. In most places I’ve been where lawns are common, a decent lawn grows thick and lush with little care save regular applications of water (water which might better be used for drinking, washing or conserving, but that’s not my business), no poisons necessary, ever. Lawns that I have grown were clean and green, so thick with healthy grass that little else could grow between the blades. So you may find a few happy, yellow Dandelions volunteering, great, Dandelion is a wonderful food, beverage and medicine.

If you don’t start with Scotts’/Monsanto’s ‘Death Seed’ and you don’t saturate the natural carpet with poison, you’ll have something that is not only pleasing to the eye but healthy to be around, and if a dandelion pops up, you’ll have good, clean, organic food-medicine-beverage.

If you go the GMO lawn route, right outside your door will be a toxic freak of anti-natural laboratory invention, not closely related to divine creation, that no one can play on, walk on or even go near without harm, and the poison will not only spread throughout OUR environment (that’s not nice), but will infiltrate your home as the sticky poison is picked up on shoes, or bare feet and the volatiles and particles are carried by air into every nook and cranny. I guess you have the right to poison yourself, but neither the poison, RoundUp (or whatever) or the genetically deranged pollen and various GM compounds can be contained and will spread without restraint.
Particularly since this nonsense threatens the world’s food supply, seeding a GMO lawn is really stepping over the line. So please Say NO to GMO.

What about the phasing out of organic grains?

Here’s the connection:

Widespread planting of genetically modified grass will result in pollen from those plants contaminating organic and traditional crops (both wild and the critically relied upon commodity crops)
, destroying their value and threatening the supply of the most relied upon food for humans and commodity animals on the planet, grain(s) (food grasses).

There are already over 165 million acres planted with invasive, destructive GM plants in the U.S., that’s more than 1/3rd of the tillable land we have. This in a county where the vast majority of polled citizens want nothing to do with GMO infected food.

Based on past experience and extrapolating the obvious, we can expect that if the GMO sick-grass plan takes off, (and it has the full support of Washington, a town under the control of Monsanto) ‘organic grains’ will become a thing of the past…

Your grandchildren may never eat healthful, organic ‘anything’…

That’s because of the inevitable, uncontrollable migration of genetically deranged traits from GMO grass ‘infecting’ similar plant types, GRAINS.
This has happened too many times already with organic corn, papaya, canola and others. It has put many farmers out of business and they have generally had no exercisable recourse against the government supported dark monster Monsanto.
In fact when GM material infects the crop of an organic or conventional (non-GMO) farmer, Monsanto generally sues the grower whose crop sustained the damage.

I’m not making this stuff up.

The complete annihilation of organic grains worldwide, for all time is almost certain to occur eventually if we don’t stop the insanity. Even for a demonic corporation with no conscience, that seems a bit excessive, but that’s what these guys are into.

That’s how we will likely take organic grains from the table to the history books. In the grander scheme, the terminator technology used in some GM seeds may eventually render all seeding plants sterile. Then, the only way to grow most of the [food and other] plants on Earth will be to purchase patented seed from, guess who. Yep, there’s that deadly endless loop thing again.

There are numerous ways in which drifting genetic contamination may result in sterilization (and other lethal derangements) of plants, but the so-called Terminator Technology programmed into seed stock which has been used in the past and is set to enjoy a resurgence in tweaked versions, in seeds sold by Giant, multinational ‘Seed Pirates’ makes a good example because it is easy to understand.

Think that’s farfetched… a stretch? You have not seen farfetched until you’ve looked at some of the despicable non-sense these thugs have engaged in.

That’s only the beginning.

When all grass in poison:

People have always relied on time spent (invested) in natural surroundings to regain baseline sanity, to recharge, recuperate, drain away toxic stress, rejuvenate, improve mental/emotional outlook and so on. This cure-all becomes more and more important (necessary) as life continues to become more busy and hectic. As wilderness continues to disappear under concrete and steel, parks are the refuge from negative stress. Intentionally placed green spaces are priceless and their use makes people and pets happier and healthier… We need them, we need more of them, and we need lots of them.

If Monsanto and their pawns at Scotts have their way, surely all such spaces will sport waves of sick blades (GMOized grass), company reps have stated so, and that will insure that the grass will be saturated with highly toxic sticky poison. A refuge no more. Then the park may look picturesque, but will be no safer than the back of an exterminator’s truck. Might as well put the neighborhood playground in a chemical dump. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. It’s happening.

GMO RoundUp Ready (RR) plants are responsible for the release of huge volumes of the POISON Glyphosate into our only environment, sickening to a greater degree the people working the fields, people and other animals eating the food and people and all living things everywhere as the poison spreads. The indiscriminant, irresponsible planting of GMO RR crops is the main causative factor behind the exacerbation of the serious superweed problem, and has literally killed countless farmers in India.

This plea asks everyone to care enough to help save not only organic grains, but all [non-GMO] grains, Humans primary food. Monsanto is such a vile, conscience-less, mean-hearted, selfish, control freak that their typical behavior is to sue if a bird or bee, or the wind current picks up some deranged pollen from a GMO field and deposits it on a virgin plot, could be hundreds of miles away. If one of the plants in the non-GMO plot expresses characteristics of the patented GM plant, or if a crack in your driveway sprouts a GMO canola plant, Monsanto agents in black suits may pull up in a black SUV, pound on your door to deliver threats and a notice of law suits… It’s happening all over the U.S. and Canada. Opinion you say. No, straight fact.

What can we do individually to save organic grains from extinction, to save all grains (the world’s main food supply), to keep our world’s plants healthy and viable and to preserve our right to keep a backyard garden, to save seed and replant without repeatedly paying the devil whatever he demands each season?
What can we do to resist the tsunami of GMO invasion and absolute corporate control of all food, water and medicine (Yes, it’s that crazy)?
And what can we do to reduce the degree to which we are poisoning the kids’ one and only planet?

We have a chance if we get serious about boycotting the GMO insanity.
We must boycott GMOs! Please help. It’s is reasonably easy to at least avoid purchasing GMOs for the most part.
There is no need to feel overwhelmed.
THERE IS A GREAT NEED TO GET ACTIVE. (The future, and the people who will want to live there will not be able to forgive apathy by those of us who have the means to turn away from the deadly course set by Monsanto, Scotts and other Monsanto wanna-be companies.
If we don’t say (very loudly) NO GMOs, our children will be but peasants kneeling at the boots of ‘King M’ (The Monsantos). King M is not a benevolent overseer, King M is mean-hearted, selfish and terminally ruthless. King M in his ultimate expression will make Hitler look like Mother Teresa.
Ideally we can resolve to never ever purchase that which we know to be GMOed again. As I said that is quite simple, if you are willing to read labels. For produce it’s a no-brainer, for packaged foods, just check the label, discover what is ‘clean’ and stick with those brands. Then review the labels occasionally to see if the manufacturer has sold out to M. Many packaged items will state ‘GMO FREE’ or ‘NON-GMO’ right up front, that’s helpful. And frankly, I think that the manufacturer of every product not printing a statement like ‘GMO FREE’ or ‘NON-GMO’ prominently on the package deserves personal phone calls (most important), letters, faxes and emails asking “Why?”.
Starting from the dietstyle typical of folks in the first world, the biggest dent is easily made by simply not eating or drinking animals, as each bite of beef or chicken, for example, equates to a whole bushel of GMO corn, soy, canola and soon (unless we prevent it) alfalfa. So called ‘organic’ meat and milk are much less likely to harbor GMO residue, but in reality plenty still sneaks in during the unregulated cycle from conception through slaughter.
Please take these steps and never look back, your body, your children and the planet will thank you.

Ode to Alfalfa

Latin Name: Medicago sativa
Other Names: Buffalo herb, Lucerne, Purple Medic, Chilean clover, Lucerne grass, Chilean clover, Buffalo grass and my favorite, ‘Father of all Foods’.
The mutant-izing of alfalfa adds insult to injury for long time ‘health nuts’ (I’m one of the nuttiest).
Alfalfa was a staple in the whole foods movement and the health food stores in the early years (the middle of the 20th century). It has been a kind of a symbol of nutritional integrity and a link to the lineage of the human race. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants (charred seed of wild alfalfa have been identified in soil layers that date to about 6000 BC at Ali Kosh, in present-day southwestern Iran. And at Abu Hureyra, a very early agricultural community in Syria, charred remains of small seeded legumes date from about 10,000 BC… That’s old).
Consider the etymology, its name is derived from “al-fac-facah”, which means “father of all foods” in Arabic.
Alfalfa is loaded with concentrations of a broad range of nutritional constituents; valuable organic acids, free amino acids, non-protein amino acids, coumarins, isoflavonoids, saponins and phyto-steroids such as b-sitosterol, campesterol, stigamsterol, etc. Alfalfa also contains vitamins A, D, E and K, oceans of chlorophyll and carotenes, and is packed with food-form minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
This hardy plant caught our attention a long time ago when we heard reports of the super-deep root system connecting alfalfa to the Earth. It’s just a cool thing; it’s a functionally meaningful attribute. There have always been reports of 120 foot deep alfalfa roots.
Beneath the lush green leaves of an alfalfa plant there really is a surprisingly large root system. Alfalfa roots grow about 6 feet per year in loose soil. Metabolically active alfalfa roots have been found (verifiably) beyond 60 feet deep. It is this large root system that is at the heart of the valuable traits of the crop. The ability of alfalfa roots to form an association with soil bacteria (Sinorhizobium meliloti) and “fix” atmospheric nitrogen into compounds that satisfy the nitrogen needs of the alfalfa crop, as well as the nitrogen needs of the following rotation crop, is well known. The ability to fix nitrogen also enables the plant to provide highly nutritional protein-rich green food. The deep root system allows alfalfa plants to access soil moisture that is not available to annual crops with shallow root systems, making alfalfa more drought-tolerant. Another function of alfalfa roots is to store carbohydrates produced in leaves so that plants can re-grow rapidly after harvest and green-up in early spring. As an added advantage, the extensive root system and early spring growth of alfalfa reduces soil and nutrient loss from nearby bare soil.
Reaching down six stories, a plant can access important, rare, micro-nutrient soil constituents. A mutant form of the plant of course will spread the integral perversions of ‘un-food’ deeply.

Alfalfa, as nature made it is a very cool plant, not too picky about where it grows, not to picky about the weather.
Health nuts have used ‘Alf’ as dried leaf, green drinks and tea; as alfalfa supplements such as tablets, capsules and extracts, various powerfully cleansing/healing high-chlorophyll preparations, topical healing poultices, wound packing and such, and of course the familiar fresh crispy sprouts; and numerous other forms.
It is also used in organic gardening. Alfalfa is typically used as a fertilizer since it adds value to the soil due to its nitrogen fixing attributes

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced early this year (2011) that they will soon be publishing their lengthy (2300+ page) Environmental Impact Statement which will give final approval in favor of Monsanto for the planting of genetically engineered Roundup Ready alfalfa.

Who is going to read the 2,300 pages? Our trusted representatives, I don’t think so. They don’t have to; they already know how the story ends. They put some more of Monsanto’s money in their pockets and steal the future from their kids.

Alfalfa is grown on something like 3-400,000 farms on many millions of acres.
Over twenty billion pounds of alfalfa are harvested each year in the United States and most is cycled through the meat that humans eat.

That’s a lot of good ol’ U.S. prime farm land poisoned and a hell of a lot of Monsanto’s favorite poison, the flagship product romantically called ‘Roundup’ being sprayed and spread all around this beautiful land, so everyone can breathe it every day (no matter where you may live) and there will be plenty of ‘Glyphosate’ (the deadly poison, Roundup) to saturate lakes, rivers, wells, oceans, Momma’s milk and baby’s young body.

Like GE (Genetically Engineered) corn and soy, (grown from Monsanto’s patented Sick-Seeds) which are already ubiquitous in the nonorganic food supply, GMO-ed alfalfa would involve farmers using alfalfa seeds that have been genetically manipulated to produce plants that will withstand super-high dousings of the chemical Roundup (Glyphosate’), these are the so called Roundup Ready seeds (RR seeds).

Repeatedly saturating the plants with Monsanto’s favorite poison renders plants hyper-susceptible to disease and unable to take up trace minerals from the soil, minerals important in human nutrition. This harsh treatment obviously can only grow sick plants and such abuse also creates invasive Super-Weeds. This asinine practice also pollutes all sectors of the environment in a powerful way.

Cross-contamination is always a downside of GE cropping (well, there is no upside), but (and this is critically important) because of the pseudo-wild nature of the alfalfa plant, Cross-contamination may really take off beyond our scariest dreams throughout the countryside of this land like never before and then rapidly and profoundly infect a broad spectrum of wildlife eating the Cross-contaminated wild plants in the mountains, deserts and planes. This scenario could intimately inject the genetically twisted sickness (of unknown consequences) into every nook of the countryside and possibly all inhabitants, from microscopic beneficial bacteria to large organisms including, of course, humans.
Like the other ‘Roundup Ready’ crops, the perverted alfalfa will likely be dosed with FIFTEEN TIMES the super-toxic Monsanto herbicide that normal commercial alfalfa gets, OR MORE. In many cases much more. In a world already saturated with poison applied to food crops (the vast majority applied to feed-crops used to fatten animals that people eat) such that residue now shows up in virtually every sample of human breast milk, the proliferation of M’s Roundup Ready crops is increasing the saturation MANY, MANY FOLD. That can’t be good. Isn’t it comforting that M has our best interest as a top priority… Heck to listen to their rhetoric (bologna) is to hear that our well-being is the reason they are in business. Does anyone out there not smell the ‘rotten’ of that claim?

Think: unstoppable herbicide-resistant super-weeds.

That’s O.K. with M. They’ll surely offer new chemical cocktails to address the problems caused by the earlier versions in an endless cascade of ever more toxic and expensive answers with no actual solution in sight.

In particular, people who eat animals and drink their milk will never again have to worry about a Glyphosate (super-poison herbicide) deficiency.

Already some 93% of U.S. soy and well over 80% of the corn is not really food at all, but GMO un-food.

Looks like Monsanto (Devil) did it. They picked three of the most widely grown crops (the big three ‘feed’ crops). M knows that because most people in the developed world eat (and drink) animals, and those animals consume 20-200 times more feed than they yield as units of food, that by locking growers into using their seed and their chemicals for ‘feed crops’, profits will repeatedly break records.

So sure, most of the corn and soy that humans eat ‘directly’ is GMO un-food anyway (though we have the choice to buy GMO-free grains and beans), but 99.9 percent of the animals that people eat and drink have been raised and fattened on GMO un-food. That is very bad for the commodity animals, deadly for the humans who eat them (not only the ag-chemicals applied to the feed crops, but other components of GM ‘trans-foods’ are accumulative) and ruinous to the Earth. Of course it means big bucks for the almost un-challengeable power which is the heartless, malevolent dictatorship named Monsanto.

There is no such thing as an ‘organically grown’ food crop in the U.S. or Canada anymore because air moves, birds fly and water flows, so the ‘devil feces’ (Monsanto’s pollen and poison) now infiltrates every corner of what once was, and maybe could be again someday, Heaven-on-Earth.

Can you recall the feelings of gratitude and wonder elicited by the inspiring words to the song ‘America the Beautiful’?

Nice sentiment, but it is now truer to say: America, The Experimental Test Site. (Monsanto’s Dumping Ground).
Everyone in the know understands that M focuses on the twisted mantra: “if you control the food supply, you control everything”.

While M is engaged in securing ownership of all food on Earth, the devil with the big M is poisoning the planet at a rate, to a degree and in ways that were heretofore unimaginable.
Sure, ever since the dawn of the misnamed ‘Green revolution’ agribusiness corporations and naive private farmers have been spreading the poisons around carelessly, but the use of M’s RR seeds demands the application of up to 15 times the usual amount of poisons, and more. Some monocrop giants have reportedly applied 35-40 times the usual amount of poisons to the fields (and the foods that people eat).
M loves the arrangement; the growers must (by contract) buy new seeds for each new planting… (the tradition of seed saving, as old as the human race, becomes illegal), and (by contract) apply only the poisons made by M. M gets fatter, gains more control, the planet chokes to death… AND THE GRANDKIDS HAVE NOWHERE TO RUN…

I remind us all that there can be no reason for not maintaining an absolute boycott of all [known] M products and all products with even a hint of GMO component.

This is relatively easy, very helpful and most satisfying.

Bt, TT, RR and rBGH:

Bt: Bt genetic manipulation causes the host organism to produce pesticide compounds internally. It has been shown that the process takes place not only in the plants grown from the perverted seed, but also in the gut of humans who eat (or are otherwise exposed to) the GMO foodstuff. Most cotton and almost all the U.S. corn is Bt. That makes people healthier? Hardly!… Actually there are now formerly healthy people who never knowingly consumed a GMOized food, but are growing pesticides inside their bodies. The release of such ridiculous GM techno-blunders into the open is the stuff of blockbuster horror movies. Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney are turning over, as this is real life and that’s truly horrifying. Coming soon to the planet you live on: ‘The Toxin That Grew From Within’.

TT: Terminator Technology produces plants that have sterile seeds so they do not flower or grow fruit after the initial planting. This requires customers to repurchase seed for every planting. One effect of the inevitable cross-contamination is the sterilization of other, and potentially ‘all’ seeding plants. Seeds are by far the most common means of plant propagation. The vast majority of plants in the world produce seeds. Seeds are not only the key component of plant reproduction, but seeds are themselves ‘foods’. The most common and nutrient-dense foods relied on worldwide are seeds (grains, beans, nuts and foods as small as poppy to as large as coconuts are all ’seeds’) Almost all food, building materials and fuel species and generally ‘commerce plants’ are grown from seed. It’s not likely that letting Terminator Technology loose will help feed the world. That’s an understatement, of course it won’t.
Even in the controlled environment of the laboratory TT represents a risk. Any corporate entity or government working on behalf of the people would never let such a time-bomb loose in the open… Guess what company did, years ago, and guess what government is the most aggressive cheerleader… Not only might Terminator Technology lead to sterilization of a broad swath of food and other plants, but literally to the sterilization of animals consuming GMOs. Numerous controlled studies have demonstrated that GMO consumption leads to sterilization. This is not new information; studies going back at least 15 years showed that by the third generation, most genetically modified soy-fed hamsters and rats lost the ability to have babies. Did you see the story on Fox News, CNN or other corporate sponsored (controlled) news outlets? No one did. Did the President or any of his cabinet heads call a news conference? After all, Genocide by fork and spoon is serious stuff. No, our trusted representatives (with a few notable exceptions) all had laryngitis. RR: RR (Roundup Ready) plants are designed to be resistant to the powerful poison ‘Roundup’. Most soy, corn, canola and cotton are RR. RR sugar beets are taking off right now and, if we don’t get off our butts RR alfalfa will be huge overnight. As sited earlier the use of Roundup Ready crops has increased the usage of herbicides measured in pounds applied per acre tremendously… Yes, what could be better for the planet than increasing the application of powerfully poisonous ag-chemicals 10, 20, 30 fold… And; Reportedly, the pollinators; bees and butterflies have apparently experienced huge population and vitality declines in recent years as the environment’s saturation with roundup-poison, necessitated by the use of RR crops has outstripped their ability to fight off the effects.

And rBGH. Good old rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone): Playing around with hormones is one of the most irresponsible versions of roulette that can be conceived. Upsetting the hormone balance by drinking the milk from an rBGH invaded cow can render one as insane as a Monsanto executive… And this provides an excellent vector for distributing foreign hormones throughout the population and the environment. Using dairy products adultered with extra foreign hormones amounts to ill-advised HRT (hormone replacement therapy). This can’t be good.

The rise of Monsanto stock is inversely related to the loss of freedoms and a lowering of health status for all of us, and worse for our children.
Monsanto, in its present state cannot exist in a healthy world. A world where people can choose what they eat (and drink) and have access to basic information regarding what is in the food (and medicine) is not the same world where Monsanto operates.

The plan is most definitely to control it all. This is not a conspiracy theory; there is nothing theoretical about it. Some company executives have candidly indicated as much, and some ex-employees insist that this is the case.

Monsanto in particular and corporate thugs like them are definitely up to the task. The sickest, most pervert, diabolical, larcenous plans have been drawn and can be exercised like clockwork (it’s happening), with apparently almost no squeamishness of conscience exhibited in the halls of Congress thanks to the ever faster revolving door between corporate boards and government agencies and the free pass given by last year’s Supreme Court to corporations, encouraging them to dump bottomless money-bombs into the election process.

Absolutely no disrespect intended towards the high institution of the U.S. Supreme Court. The conflicts of interest and the corporate influence however are despicable and ruinous to the welfare of the people. The situation is much worse that the graphic suggests. That’s how deep it runs… This is why WE MUST BOYCOT… Because Monsanto has purchased Washington, we cannot afford to purchase GMOs.

For decades, the Monsanto Corporation has been engaged in systematically taking over the world’s supply of seed for staple crops (corn, soybeans, alfalfa, potatoes, cotton, canola, sugar beets), the first three are the Big Three ‘Feed’ Crops.
Monsanto has spent over $30 billion in recent years buying numerous U.S. seed companies. As a result, just two giant firms (chemical companies), Monsanto and Pioneer (DuPont), now literally control the U.S. seed business. Talk about putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Please excuse the analogy foxes of the wild, it’s a poor analogy anyway, as foxes having an instinctive interest in hens seems natural and has nothing to do with total control, nor is it mean-hearted, while Monsanto’s endeavors are not about survival, but are indeed mean-hearted, selfish and all about total control.

A key component of the U.S./Monsanto plan to dominate world agriculture with genetically modified seeds is the absence of labeling of genetically engineered foods. All U.S. foods must carry labels listing the ingredients: salt, sugar, water, vitamins, colors/flavors, additives, etc. However, three separate U.S. government agencies; the Food & Drug Administration (FDA, the. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have ruled that genetically modified foods deserve an exception: they can be sold without any label indication that the product contains genetically modified material.
We are talking about something that is ‘manufactured’, not grown (the seed stock), behind locked doors with partially secret technologies and no oversight and no regulation, something which nature could not produce in a zillion years and is then placed into the marketplace with zero label accountability and they expect us to feed that stuff to our children. I DON’T THINK SO!
This strategy is inherently Un-democratic because it prevents consumers from exercising informed choice in the marketplace and dramatically reduces the likelihood of a consumer revolt. Conveniently, without labeling it is next to impossible to hold the Monsantos legally responsible when people die or become ill from exposure to the genetically perverted material. Why do you think the Monsantos spend trainloads of money lobbying against labeling? Well that is ONE reason.

We can still turn the tide of total control by Monsanto. But if we don’t get active, it’s going to happen. A most basic right will fall into history. If we don’t get active there will be no meaningful food choices, no home gardens, no healthful food, nothing to eat that won’t make you sick. You will pay ‘the corporation’ even for water that comes up from your own well, rain that falls in your yard and then you’ll face a law suit if a volunteer plant happens to sprout in your back yard. This will be the near and far future if we just continue with complacency.

We must say “NO to GMOs!

Don’t let this happen. If we do, baby’s first meal will be mom’s milk saturated with high concentrations of poisons that didn’t even exist a few years ago, and her first bite of solid food will set her up for a [short] lifetime of irreversible ill conditions at best and life-threatening severe allergic reactions in many cases.

We have a chance if we get serious about boycotting the GMO insanity.

If we don’t say (very loudly) NO GMOs, our children will be but peasants kneeling at the boots of ‘King M’. King M is not a benevolent overseer, King M is mean hearted, selfish and terminally ruthless. King M in his ultimate expression will make Hitler look like Mother Teresa.

Obviously we must resolve to never ever purchase that which we know to be GMOed again. As I said that is quite simple, if you are willing to read labels. For produce it’s a no-brainer, for packaged foods, just check the label, discover what is ‘clean’ and stick with those brands. Then review the labels occasionally to see if the manufacturer has sold out to M. Many packaged items will state ‘GMO FREE’ or ‘NON-GMO’ right up front, that’s helpful. And frankly, I think that the manufacturer of every product not printing a statement like ‘GMO FREE’ or ‘NON-GMO’ prominently on the package deserves personal phone calls (most important), letters, faxes and emails asking “Why?”.

Starting from the dietstyle typical of folks in the first world, the biggest dent is easily made by simply not eating or drinking animals, as each bite of beef or chicken, for example, equates to a whole bushel of GMO corn, soy, canola and soon (unless we prevent it) alfalfa. So called ‘organic’ meat and milk are much less likely to harbor GMO residue, but in reality plenty still sneaks in during the unregulated cycle from conception through slaughter.

Please take these steps and never look back, your body, your children and the planet will thank you.

We can imagine that for all of human history, up until very recently no one ‘owned’ seeds, no one owned life. In the first half of the 20th century, seeds were overwhelmingly in the hands of farmers and public-sector plant breeders. In the decades since then, Gene Giants have abused intellectual property laws to commodify the world seed supply - a strategy that aims to control plant germplasm and maximize profits by eliminating Farmers’ Rights’.

Today, the proprietary seed (Ownership of life) market accounts for a staggering share of the world’s commercial seed supply. In less than 30 years a few huge multinational corporations have largely taken control the food supply by ‘owning’ the ability to reproduce plants.

The junk of concern for the sake of this discussion is the stuff containing:

Canola: Canola, usually as canola (or rape seed) oil, sometimes canola meal in pet food.
Soy: Conventional soy and its derivatives, (oil, TVP, protein and most lecithin).
Corn and its many veiled faces: Conventional (Not organic) corn, and the numerous pervasive conventional corn creations HFCS, (High fructose corn syrup) corn oil, corn syrup, crystalline fructose, ascorbic acid, (vitamin C) citric acid, lactic acid, gluten, dextrose, and glucose and modified food starch.
Cottonseed: Cotton-seed is also usually GMOed; it will show up as oil or meal.
Remember the five biggies CORN, CANOLA, SOY, COTTONSEED and MILK. If any of these are in a product and NOT organic, you can bet they are GMOed.
Additionally most Hawaiian papaya.
Some tobacco, (crossing the food-line, but people do ‘take it in’ and it still infects the environment, so it bares mentioning).
And more recently sugar beets. Already, zillions of acres in the U.S. have been planted with the GMOed tubers, although some legal backlash may prevent the beet thing from totally kicking in, but if GMOed sugar beets do become the new ‘bad joke’ in agribusiness just imagine, then almost all of the sweetener used in almost all of the stuff that Americans eat will automatically be GMOed by way of GMO-corn-fructose and GMO-beet sugar. That’ll be the scariest thing on Halloween!
Sugar: Now, because umpteen different versions of sugar are synthesized from GMO corn and GMO sugarbeets are coming on line, if you find ‘sugar’ as an ingredient you must assume that it is Monsanto’s ‘extra-poisonous GMO sugar’ unless the label offers source information. I am assuming that you would not bring pure granulated sugar into the house… Even if you use granulated sugar to catch ants or for some utilitarian purpose, an organic version would be much safer around the house, as GMO mutations screw things up in many ways (most as yet unknown), at many levels.
If there is a product that you like or would like to use and it is not GMO free, or you can’t tell from the fuzzy label, please call the retailer and ask them to find out… We are talking about products designed to use internally (become part of you and the kids), so it’s quite reasonable that the purveyor can tell you what the heck it is. Then as soon as you talk to Safeway, Whole Foods or whomever, call the manufacturer too. Please explain that you have a right to know what you put in your body. If the product is not 100% GMO free, give them heck, file a complaint. They need to know. It’s actually in the best interest of their shareholders… They want to sell you stuff, lots of it. The manufacturers need to know what they can produce which you can feel good about and will buy consistently.
These are two critical links in the chain, the chain which can deliver into your home and your family’s bodies either ‘next generation poison’ or ‘life-giving, planet-preserving healthful food’. The local store and the manufacturer are the links to stay in touch with. All stores have managers who are there to help you. All manufacturers have customer service reps to serve you. Take their help, help them, and help yourself at the same time simply by communicating. It’s free. It’s what we need to do to get the Monsanto monkey off our backs. No offense intended monkeys. We do the work, and there is nothing to it really, or we all pay the price. It is sad indeed to contemplate what a shambles the food system will be for the kids if we don’t act.

It is really quite easy to ovoid most GMO deranged food, it won’t be so easy soon if we don’t stop buying it now, but it’s an easy adjustment today.
The basics:
~ Fresh produce: It is very easy to buy fresh produce with the confidence that it is not intentionally perverted with the genes of a deadly virus from the pus of a South American cockroach, and fresh produce makes up the greatest portion of the diet of health-conscious folks anyway.
In the U.S. right now, all fresh and most frozen fruits and veggies will be GMO-free (that’s actually a relative term anymore), even if it’s not ‘organic’ unless the item is;
~ Corn or the little pear-shaped Hawaiian papayas. There are some instances of exception, but for simplicity let’s just say; fresh produce is safe with the two notable exceptions above.
~ Frozen and canned: Frozen and canned fruits and veggies are like the fresh ones unless there are other ingredients, which is very often the case. If other ingredients are listed, just clear, or condemn them based on the info above…
Mostly watch for:
Corn derived junk such as HFCS, (High fructose corn syrup) corn oil and corn syrup; Canola, usually as canola (or rape seed) oil,
Soy and its derivatives, (oil, TVP, protein and most lecithin),
and Cottonseed oil. Any of these ingredients are O.K. if organic, but virtually guaranteed to be GMOed if not.
See, that’s not so hard, and remember it will only get better if we make it so… Stop buying GMOs.
~ Milk and its many derivatives are (relatively) GMO free ONLY when organic or the producer is personally known and verifies the stuff as ‘clean’. Most dairy cows are polluted with rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) and 99.9% of dairy cows carry foreign gene contamination because virtually everything they are fed for their entire lives is GMO feed.
~ The same goes for the meat of cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep and lambs; they spend most of their short lives gorging on GMO corn, soy and now alfalfa.
~ The bigger challenge for those wanting to avoid GMOed food is with packaged and prepared foods. Still, it’s easy to just read the labels, you may need magnification, but just read the label. In fact I find that it helps the cause more if we simply call the store and/or manufacturer and ask them to recite the ingredients. You really have only to look for those few items listed above. The item either passes the test or is GMOed (and thus unacceptable). No problem, there are safe and sensible versions of everything.

So that’s it:
Eat lots of fruits and veggies which you can buy with relative confidence, be a little more careful with frozen and canned, rely less on packaged stuff with mile-long ingredient lists or check the label. If you eat and drink animals, good luck (remember, each bite of flesh and every sip of cows’ milk represents hundreds-of-thousands of kernels of GMO corn, hundreds-of-thousands of GMO soybeans and/or tens-of-thousands of GMO alfalfa plants) unless the animals were really organic. When eating out ask questions. It really helps to bring up the subject and it’s good for the folks at the next table to hear that someone else considers the GMO issue important. But if you’d rather not go through that at the table, call first and check it out over the phone. I know many of us won’t bring it up in the restaurant and that’s too bad because it is effective at initiating change but we can all only do our best. Speaking only for myself, I sincerely appreciate each and every effort you make on behalf of taking back your ‘creator-given’ right to chose what you eat… and to know exactly what that is.

‘We The People’ have brought about so many important changes and innovations by simply demanding something better. That’s how it works. Here, we are talking about ridding our bodies, our only home (the Earth) and our children’s future of maybe the most diabolical, life threatening shotgun technology ever conceived. And for those of us among the dwindling number of people who deny the sickness that is GMO food, I respectfully remind us all that even if you had the right to grow dangerous genetically twisted poison plants, you could never have the right to spread the sickness through wind and water. Everything in the open spreads to the whole of ‘The Commons’ and as far as we know genetic derangements created in the laboratory cannot be recalled once they are released in the open. Further, the interactions between the microbes and cells of ill-conceived genetic mutants are known to lead to next-generation mutations and obviously interactions upon interactions will affect all of life in ways that can’t be predicted. I submit that “You do not have the right to impose such a scenario on our world”. The thing is that if you are not part of the solution (by actively boycotting GMOs), you are automatically part of the problem, (a problem which can persist forever and increase in intensity), like it or not.
I have simplified the ‘bad list’ of GMO foods/ingredients just a bit. Don’t worry, the plants covered account for almost all GMO foods being shoved down our thoughts in the U.S. today. If you boycott most of that most of the time, you’ll be doing great, and when enough of us do likewise the market will dwindle. It works!
And yes, we should call our representatives, call the White House (I do that almost every day) and even call Monsanto and their emulators (is that a word?). I like to call M just to be amazed at their delusive answers . I think (and I’ve been doing this for years) calling the devil doesn’t do much good.
Your time is valuable, so make it count.
It’s very much appropriate to remind our representatives on a frequent bases that we don’t appreciate being sold out, and that we watch their every move. But even that won’t get the job done if we are still buying the mutant products.
Boycott GMO food today or soon there will be no point in a label law.
Boycott GMO food and it will go away. Don’t bother and the future will pay dearly.

I know, the Vilsack appointment was like putting Charles Manson in charge of the National Mental Health Commission, we at GMO To Go (www.gmotogo.com) fought hard to resist the appointment and will soon be mounting a whole new drive to remove him… Stay tuned.

The following are talking points suggested by Organic Consumers Association:
1) I am very disappointed and concerned that the USDA is letting Monsanto distribute two new genetically modified crops, alfalfa and sugar beets, this Spring.
2) Genetically modified foods haven’t been adequately safety tested, but we know from the research that has been done that genetically modified foods are more likely to trigger allergies; could cause cancer, liver damage and reproductive problems; are less nutritious than normal food; and are produced using more herbicides.
3) Given the dangers of genetic modification, the USDA should place a moratorium on Monsanto’s crops. They shouldn’t be grown until they’re proven safe. No new genetically modified crops should be allowed without long-term independent studies of their health and environmental impacts.
4) The greatest concern is that genetically modified crops will permanently contaminate the organic and non-GMO seed supply. Experts warn that contamination is inevitable.
5) Secretary Vilsack’s talk of “coexistence” was a fraud. The idea that the USDA would regulate GMOs to prevent contamination was a false promise designed to divide the organic community and weaken opposition to GMOs. Organic leaders won’t be fooled again. We’re united now and will fight until we win the only real protection for organic: a ban on GMOs.

Information was leaked a while ago concerning the work being done in the ‘back laboratories’ of some genetic modification company(ies) on the development of GM dairy rats, that’s right, ‘dairy rats’. The idea, as I understand it is to modify combined rat species, which will eventually be clone-able, to produce milk for human consumption. Word is that in the near future the inventive GM guys will have a new species of rat; it will be unique enough that they can give it an official name which is NOT ‘rat’. The new rat (referred to by a euphemism not yet decided on by the marketing guys) will produce milk at the rate of up to 25% its body weight per day, and the Not-Rats will be big, possibly nine pounds. They probably will work very hard, yet virtually never move from their immobilizing ‘container’, they will probably have legs, but won’t need them, they will be short lived, but breeder versions and/or clone-masters will ‘keep ‘um coming’. Likewise, pigs are being ‘altered’ in a similar manner for the same reason. Work is well underway on these two species of mammals because of the similarity in milk nutritional profiles to that of human milk.

I have more sensitive info/insight regarding entities that have been widely accepted as being on our side in the GMO invasion thing, entities which are actually very supportive of the dark invasion and very much to blame for the advancement of ‘The Monsantos’.

USDA Says Yes to Genetically Engineered Sugarbeets

While those of us working on the GMO invasion have been focused on the GMO alfalfa fiasco, the moratorium on the planting of GMO-ized sugar beets has been lifted.

The US Department of Agriculture last Friday gave farmers the go-ahead to resume planting Roundup Ready sugarbeets, claiming [GET THIS] “it’s the only way to avoid a nationwide shortage of sugar”.


Now wouldn’t that just be terrible if the U.S., where people with type two diabetes (T2D) are poised to out-number people without the self-imposed condition, and where most of us are ’starving from over-eating’ nutrient deficient sugary junk were to fall into a nationwide shortage of sugar?

In a nation where misguided citizens literally eat their weight in ‘added’ sugar every year, our thoughtful overlords at the USDA are concerned about a sugar shortage. Thanks guys.

Now that the feds have sold out the people AGAIN and Genetically Engineered Sugarbeets are about to become the new ‘bad joke’ in agribusiness just imagine, soon almost all of the sweetener (not including highly toxic artificial sweeteners) used in almost all of the stuff that Americans eat will automatically be GMOed by way of GMO-corn-fructose (already the junk-food industry’s choice over cane sugar) and GMO-beet sugar.
Refined sugar remember, is not used to make medicine, build houses, effectively feed the hungry or make peace. It certainly will not hold down the cost of health care… It is in fact ‘the genesis of slavery’ in the U.S.
So it’s hard to believe that anyone not under the influence of ‘refined sugar intoxication poisoning’ would be comforted by the USDA’s reasoning.

The backsliding USDA said it would once again allow the GMO sugarbeet to be planted, contrary to the order of district court judge Jeffrey S. White, who said a full environmental impact statement (EIS) needed to be done first. This would have bought us some time because an EIS of the type ordered by the judge is usually thousands of pages long and takes years to conduct. That would have kept the genetically modified sugarbeets out of the hands of farmers until 2013.
But Monsanto couldn’t wait. They don’t have to because they tell the feds what to do! Monsanto runs the show. Their plan is to run the world.

This treasonous move by the USDA will allow farmers to begin planting GE sugarbeets this spring. Meanwhile, the environmental and organic seed groups that originally sued the USDA said they would ask Judge White to block this latest move by the USDA. We need to support them.

In this case, the sugarbeets are being “partially deregulated”: USDA is permitting farmers to plant genetically modified sugarbeets this year only if they adhere to rules designed to prevent the plant’s wind-blown pollen from reaching organic fields, where its biotechnology traits could spread. Of course, that’s not possible and there is no oversight anyway.

Don’t these jerks realize that half of the smog in California originated in Asia a week earlier?… Stuff moves! The statements that regularly spring from the mouths of Monsanto spokespeople and their personal pawns at the USDA suggests insincerity, confirm insanity, and profoundly insult our intelligence.

Remember that genetically modified ‘anything’ released in the open will spread its deranged characteristics and known and unknown ‘anti-life’ traits around the planet.

Remember also that any of the ‘Roundup Ready’ crops require huge increases in the application of Monsanto’s favorite poison, the herbicide ‘Roundup’.

We, (well it’s mostly me), at GMO To Go (WWW. GMOToGo.com) have been working feverishly, calling, emailing and writing representatives, calling natural food stores, grocery stores, restaurants and school commissaries all over the country.

When we talk to government reps we explain the bologna associated with the laissez-faire treatment, and lack of regulation/oversight of something as ‘un-recallable’ as GMO contamination, remind them that lots of us are paying close attention, and will only vote for individuals offering the least support for GMOs and will only campaign for those who openly work to subdue the GMO invasion and corporate control of our world. When we talk to retailers, food service companies and school lunch facilitators we ask first “what is your policy regarding the use of GMO foods and ingredients?” Then, if the opportunity presents itself we do some general educating. This is good because education is what is most lacking. A deficit of knowledge on the subject is common, that’s what the Monsantos are counting on, that’s why we have no meaningful GMO labeling in the U.S. Certainly, education and knowledge is Monsanto’s biggest worry.

It does not have to be complicated or go deep. Simply calling attention to the fact that most people ‘word-wide’ want nothing to do with GMO food, yet Americans are eating it in 80% of what they put on the family table… maybe a few points about the known detrimental effects and the fact that there are many unknowns will get folks thinking.

We have tested various scripts for these communications over the past few years and I think we have some reliable and effective favorites which make the job easy for the activist and a no-brainer for the contact.
When we get to the point that the average food store is contacted at least once a day, the average grocery corporate headquarters is contacted several times a day, and the average natural food chain-store store asked about their GMO policy several times a day, good things will happen.

You see, we had this ‘infectious’ sugar beet thing on hold. It was a very positive development, but the USDA caved again. It’s not easy for an agency to stand up to the likes of Monsanto, all government agencies have long since been infiltrated be corporate operatives and the tactics used by Monsanto-like giants are the stuff of the darkest crime novels.

But!
The people have the power.

If we don’t stop GMO insanity, surely the children will pay and there will be no forgiving our apathy.

A little insight into the Monsanto (and GM industry) lobbyist / Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack speaking to an audience he couldn’t fool…

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was getting lots of appreciative applause and head nods from the packed hall at the Community Food Security Coalition conference today, held in Des Moines, Iowa. He described the USDA’s plans to improve school nutrition, support local food systems, and work with the Justice Department to review the impact of corporate agribusiness on small farmers. But then, with time for only one more question, I was handed the microphone.

“Mr. Secretary, may I ask a tough question on GMOs?”

He said yes.

“The American Academy of Environmental Medicine this year said that genetically modified foods, according to animal studies, are causally linked to accelerated aging, dysfunctional immune regulation, organ damage, gastrointestinal distress, and immune system damage. A study came out by the Union of Concerned Scientists confirming what we all know, that genetically modified crops, on average, reduce yield. A USDA report from 2006 showed that farmers don’t actually increase income from GMOs, but many actually lose income. And for the last several years, the United States has been forced to spend $3-$5 billion per year to prop up the prices of the GM crops no one wants.

“When you were appointed Secretary of Agriculture, many of our mutual friends—I live in Iowa and was proud to have you as our governor—assured me that you have an open mind and are very reasonable and forward thinking. And so I was very excited that you had taken this position as Secretary of Agriculture. And I’m wondering, have you ever heard this information? Where do you get your information about GMOs? And are you willing to take a delegation in D.C. to give you this hard evidence about how GMOs have actually failed us, that they’ve been put onto the market long before the science is ready, and it’s time to put it back into the laboratory until they’ve done their homework.”

The room erupted into the loudest applause of the morning.

Secretary Vilsack knew at once what kind of crowd he was dealing with. Or so I thought.

He said he was willing to visit with folks, to read studies, to learn as much as he possibly can. He pointed out that there are lots of studies, not necessarily consistent, even conflicting. He said he was in the process of working on a set of regulations and had brought proponents and opponents together to search for common ground. And he was looking to create a regulatory system with sufficient assurances and protections.

At this point in his answer, Secretary Vilsack, who has a history of favoring GMOs—and even appears to be more pro-GMO than his Bush administration predecessors—was trying to sound even handed. Then he made a tragic mistake.

After a slight pause, he added in a warm tone, “I will tell you that the world is very concerned about the ever-increasing population of the globe and the capacity to be able to feed all of those people.”

Moans, groans, hisses, even boos. Not rowdy, mind you. But clearly agitated.

You see, the people in the room were among the top experts at actually feeding the world. They included numerous PhDs who had spent their careers looking deeply into the issue. Among those present were several of the authors of the authoritative IAASTD report. The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development, is the most comprehensive evaluation of world agriculture ever. It was a three-year collaborative effort with 900 participants and 110 countries, and was co-sponsored by all the majors, e.g. the World Bank, FAO, UNESCO, WHO. The behemoth effort evaluated the last 50 years of agriculture, and prescribed the methods that were now needed to meet the development and sustainability goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods, and facilitating social and environmental sustainability.

And GMOs was not one of those needed methods! It was clear to the experts that the current generation of GMOs did not live up to the hype continuously broadcast by biotech companies and their promotional East Coast wing—the federal government.

In fact, the night before Vilsack addressed the conference, the same audience heard a keynote by Hans Herren, the co-chairman of the IAASTD report, during which he reiterated that biotechnology was not up to the task. And this morning, Hans Herren was in the room when Vilsack tried to play the feed-the-world card. Bad move.
Vilsack responded to the crowd’s rejection by saying, “And well you all can disagree with this, but I am just telling you this. As I travel the world, I am just telling you what people are telling me. They are very concerned about this.”

Thus, he distanced himself from the contentious, and fallacious, argument. He was just reporting what others had told him.

And that may in fact be his problem with understanding the serious health and environmental dangers of GMOs in general, if he is simply, as he says, repeating what others—Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont—have told him over and over again.

It’s true that I have mutual friends of Tom Vilsack who like and respect him and believe him to be reasonable and thoughtful. I have seen this myself, but not on the GMO issue.

Perhaps the reaction of the experts this morning will help to jar him out of his GMOs-feed-the-world mindset. Unfortunately, he is now deeply immersed in the second of this week’s food conferences here in Des Moines, the World Food Prize. It features the major GMO promoters from around the world, including Bill Gates (who gives tens of millions to GMO development in Africa), and top executives of DuPont and Syngenta. Expect to hear constant chatter about how GMOs are the solution to world hunger which, unfortunately, may undue any of the restructuring that this morning’s run-in with reality may have awakened.

In the meantime, if there are Q & A sessions at meetings where Secretary Vilsack is speaking or attending, I’ll do my best to get to a mic.

Wikileaks Exposes Monsanto GMOs - U.S. Conspired To Retaliate Against Any Nations, If They Resisted GMOs
Wikileaks continues to rock the political world by shedding light on conspiracies, corruption and cover-ups. The latest batch of diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks reveals what can only be characterized as a U.S.-led conspiracy to force GMOs onto European countries by making those countries pay a steep price if they resist.

The cable reveals the words of Craig Stapleton, the US ambassador to France, who was pushing the commercial interests of the bio-tech industry by attempting to force GMOs into France. In his own words (below), he expresses his frustration with the idea that France might pass environmental laws that would hamper the expansion of GMOs:

“Europe is moving backwards not forwards on this issue with France playing a leading role, along with Austria, Italy and even the [European] Commission… Moving to retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voice.”

U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks reveal the Bush administration drew up ways to retaliate against Europe for refusing to use genetically modified seeds. In 2007, then-U.S. ambassador to France Craig Stapleton was concerned about France’s decision to ban cultivation of genetically modified corn produced by biotech giant Monsanto. He also warned that a new French environmental review standard could spread anti-biotech policy across Europe. We speak with Jeffrey Smith of the Institute for Responsible Technology. [includes rush transcript]
JUAN GONZALEZ: U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks reveal the Bush administration drew up ways to retaliate against Europe for refusing to use genetically modified seeds. In 2007, then-US ambassador to France Craig Stapleton was concerned about France’s decision to ban cultivation of genetically modified corn produced by biotech giant Monsanto. He also warned that a new French environmental review standard could spread anti-biotech policy across Europe.
In the leaked cable, Stapleton writes, quote, “Europe is moving backwards not forwards on this issue with France playing a leading role, along with Austria, Italy and even the [European] Commission…Moving to retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voice.”
AMY GOODMAN: Ambassador Stapleton goes on to write, quote, “Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the worst culprits. The list should be measured rather than vicious and must be sustainable over the long term, since we should not expect an early victory,” he wrote.
Well, for more, we’re going to Iowa City to speak with Jeffrey Smith, executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, author of two books, Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating and the book Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods.
Jeffrey Smith, joining us by Democracy Now! video stream, thanks so much for being with us. Talk about the significance of these documents leaked by WikiLeaks.
JEFFREY SMITH: Well, we’ve been saying for years that the United States government has joined at — is joined at the hip with Monsanto and pushing GMOs as part of Monsanto’s agenda on the rest of the world. This lays bare the mechanics of that effort. We have Craig Stapleton, the former ambassador to France, specifically asking the U.S. government to retaliate and cause some harm throughout the European Union. And then, two years later, in 2009, we have a cable from the ambassador to Spain from the United States asking for intervention there, asking the government to help formulate a biotech strategy and support the government — members of the government in Spain that want to promote GMOs, as well. And here, they specifically indicate that they sat with the director of Monsanto for the region and got briefed by him about the politics of the region and created strategies with him to promote the GMO agenda.
JUAN GONZALEZ: Now, they apparently were especially interested in one Monsanto product, MON 810. Could you talk about that?
JEFFREY SMITH: Yes. This is the first seed that was approved for widespread planting. You see, the biotech industry was concerned initially about the European Union accepting genetically modified foods. Although that had been approved for years by the commission, the food industry had rejected it because consumers were concerned. And so, there hasn’t been a lot of food going to the European Union that’s genetically modified.
However, they had planned to allow the growing of genetically modified seeds. Now that MON 810 has been allowed, individual countries have stepped forward to ban in. And so, in 2007, they were concerned about that, and so they were trying to create a strategy to force these countries to accept the first of the genetically modified seeds. Since then, there’s been more evidence showing that this genetically modified corn damages mice and rats, etc., can cause reductions of fertility, smaller litter sizes, smaller offspring, immune responses, etc. And these have gone largely ignored by both the European Food Safety Authority and the United States FDA.
AMY GOODMAN: Talk about these health effects. Jeffrey Smith, you wrote a fascinating “Anniversary of a Whistleblowing Hero” piece about a British scientist and about the repercussions he suffered. He was one of the biggest GMO advocates. And explain what happened and what he actually learned.
JEFFREY SMITH: Well, Dr. Arpad Pusztai was actually working on a $3 million grant from the U.K. government to figure out how to test for the safety of GMOs. And what he discovered quite accidentally is that genetically modified organisms are inherently unsafe. Within 10 days, his supposedly harmless GMO potatoes caused massive damage to rats — smaller brains, livers and testicles, partial atrophy of the liver, damaged immune system, etc. And what he discovered was it was the process, the generic process of genetic engineering, that was likely the cause of the problem. He went public with his concerns and was a hero.
AMY GOODMAN: But I think you have to — Jeffrey Smith, if you could explain this. This is very significant, because he was an expert on the protein that was — it’s this kind of insecticide. And everyone thought, oh, that might be the thing that would hurt people. But he said, actually, it wasn’t the thing that was injected into the — or however it works when you genetically modify a potato, when you put that chemical inside, the protein inside the potato — it wasn’t that.
JEFFREY SMITH: Exactly. You see, he was testing with rats that were eating the genetically modified potato, engineered to produce an insecticidal protein. But he also tested other groups of rats that were eating natural potatoes that were spiked with that same protein, and then a third group that was just eating natural potatoes without the insecticide. Only the group that ate the genetically engineered potato got these problems, not the group that was eating the potatoes along with the insecticide. So it clearly wasn’t the insecticide; it was somehow the process of genetic engineering.
Now, that process creates massive collateral damage inside the DNA of the plant. Hundreds and thousands of mutations can be formed. There could be hundreds or thousands of genes that are natural genes in the plant that change their levels of expression. For example, with MON 810 corn, they found that there was a gene that is normally silent that is switched on and now creates an allergen in corn. They found 43 different genes that were significantly up-regulated or down-regulated, meaning that there’s massive changes in these crops and they’re not being evaluated by the U.S. — by the FDA or any other regulatory authority around the world before being put onto the market.
JUAN GONZALEZ: Now, was there any indication from the cables or from your research that the pressure that Ambassador Stapleton and other U.S. officials were putting on the E.U. had the desired effect? Because obviously Ambassador Stapleton, or former Ambassador Stapleton, was not just any former ambassador, he was the former co-owner of the Texas Rangers with former President George W. Bush.
JEFFREY SMITH: Well, we’ve seen a consistent effort by the U.S. to bully Europe. But, you see, European — the European mind on this is kind of divided. Some countries are clearly in the camp of precautionary principle and protecting interests for health. Others are basically moving in lockstep with the U.S. government and Monsanto. So it’s a fiercely pitched battle on every front in Europe.
A lot of the focus of the State Department has been on developing countries. They try and push GMOs into Africa. They deployed the Secretary of State’s chief advisory — scientific adviser, Nina Fedoroff, to Australia and to India. They tried to engage the Indian government with a contract or a treaty that would allow their scientists to be trained in the U.S. So they’ve been working around the world to try and influence policy on every single continent. And in some cases, they’re doing — they’re actually winning, where they’re overtaking the regulatory authorities and making it quite weak, like it is in the U.S. And in some cases in Europe now, there’s more resistance than ever, now that it’s “not in my backyard” politics, “no planting in my country” type of politics.
AMY GOODMAN: Jeffrey Smith, can you compare the Obama administration on biotechnology with the Bush administration?
JEFFREY SMITH: Unfortunately, we were hoping for a lot more success. President Obama, while he was campaigning here in Iowa, promised that he would require labeling of genetically modified crops. And since most Americans say they would avoid GMOs if labeled, that would have eliminated it from the food supply. But, you see, he and the FDA have been promoting the biotechnology. And unfortunately, the Obama administration has not been better than the Bush administration, possibly worse.
For example, the person who was in charge of FDA policy in 1992, Monsanto’s former attorney, Michael Taylor, he allowed GMOs on the market without any safety studies and without labeling, and the policy claimed that the agency was not aware of any information showing that GMOs were significantly different. Seven years later, because of a lawsuit, 44,000 secret internal FDA memos revealed that that policy was a lie. Not only were the scientists at the FDA aware that GMOs were different, they had warned repeatedly that they might create allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. But they were ignored, and their warnings were even denied, and the policy went forth allowing the deployment GMOs into the food supply with virtually no safety studies. That person in charge is now the U.S. food safety czar in the Obama administration.
JUAN GONZALEZ: And what is your general assessment of the sweeping reform that the Obama administration pushed through of the FDA, considered one of the biggest reforms of that agency in decades? Your assessment of it?
JEFFREY SMITH: Well, if the FDA were absolutely dedicated to protecting public health, giving them more power makes sense. But investigation after investigation for years, it turns out that they often serve their, quote, “clients,” which is industry. Even one-third of their own surveyed members in September revealed that they believe that corporate and special interests really dictates policy in the area of public health. So, my opinion is, giving them more power without first eliminating that bias towards corporations is a dangerous formula. In fact, they are officially mandated with promoting the biotech industry, which is obviously a conflict of interest.
AMY GOODMAN: I know both Eric Schlosser and also Michael Pollan have hailed the food safety legislation, but on the issue of talking to the State Department and what they’re pushing abroad, I want to just say we did call the State Department and did not get a response. We wanted them to come on today’s broadcast.
Finally, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Jeffrey Smith, your assessment?
JEFFREY SMITH: Well, he was our governor here in Iowa, and he was the biotech governor of the year in 2001. And unfortunately, he’s been following that course of action since he has been put in office. They released today the environmental impact statement for alfalfa, where they ignore their own data regarding the increase of pesticides because of GMOs. They ignore the data of their own scientists and other scientists, which show the use of Roundup, which will be promoted through this Roundup Ready alfalfa, is actually very toxic both for the environment and for human health. And so, he, as well as many others of the Obama administration, have been taken essentially from the biotech ranks and are now calling the shots there. And I’m very disappointed.
There was some indication in the EIS, however, for the alfalfa that he might take into consideration concerns about contamination, which we all know is permanent, where the self-propagating genetic pollution of genetically modified foods can outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste. It’s being released now without — with very little concern. Finally, we see some ray of light, where they’re actually paying attention, but it’s not enough. It’s not based really on science.

Among the other founding members of, AGRA, we find: Monsanto, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis, GlaxoSmithKline, Procter and Gamble, Merck, Mosaic, Pfizer, Sumitomo Chemical and Yara. The fact that these corporations are either chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturers is no coincidence.

Seeds of Opportunism,
Climate change offers these businesses a perfect excuse to prey on the poorest countries by swooping in to “rescue” the farmers and people with their GMO crops and chemical pesticides. These corporations eradicate the traditional ways of the country’s agriculture for the sake of enormous profits.
The introduction of GMOs drastically affects a local farmers income, as the price of chemicals required for GMOs and seeds from Monsanto cripples the farmer’s meager profit margins.
There are even many cases of Monsanto suing small farmers after pollen from their GMO crops accidentally cross with the farmer’s crops. Because Monsanto has a patent on theri brand of seed, they claim the farmer is in violation of patent laws.
These disgusting and inhumane practices will not be tolerated.
Anonymous urges all concerned citizens to stand up for these farmers, stand up for the future of your own food. Protest, organize, spread info to your friends!
